President Biden Hosts Diwali Celebration at the White House
On Monday, President Joe Biden celebrated Diwali at the White House, hosting over 600 Indian American dignitaries, including congress members, officials, and corporate leaders. Biden highlighted his longstanding connection with South Asian Americans, emphasizing their integral role in his administration and staff, from Vice President Kamala Harris to Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy.
The event featured remarks by youth activist Shrusti Amula and a video message from NASA astronaut Sunita Williams. Reflecting on Diwali’s importance, Biden recalled hosting one of the first White House Diwali celebrations in 2016. He acknowledged that in 2024, some challenges toward immigrant communities resurfaced, yet he urged unity and resilience, celebrating Diwali’s spirit of light overcoming darkness. The president also lit a ceremonial diya in the White House’s Blue Room, honoring South Asian Americans’ contributions to American democracy.
